POLATIS switch at the heart of yet another networking record at SC24 Conference in Atlanta!
In this post, Rich Jensen, VP Program Management and Architecture, at HUBER+SUHNER Polatis reports
on the Polatis participation in this year’s SC24 and SCinet.
HUBER+SUHNER Polatis was proud to be a part of building the SCinet high-performance network for the
SC24 supercomputing conference, where yet another WAN conference record was set. The Atlanta conference brought together members of the international high-performance computing, networking,
storage and analysis community to share the latest research, technologies and demonstrations. This
year’s conference theme was "hpc creates" with a particular focus on developments in high
performance computing for AI and Quantum applications.
SCinet is the dedicated high-capacity network for the annual conference. It is designed and built by a
global volunteer collaboration of high-performance networking experts, which this year numbered over
200 heads, with donated hardware estimated at $50 million in value from 39 vendors including an
optical circuit switch (OCS) from Bronze Supporter HUBER+SUHNER Polatis. SCinet serves not only to
provide wi-fi access to all the participants but is a core part of the globe-spanning data transmissions
that contribute to the exciting demonstrations and experiments which are a key part of the conference
and exhibition proceedings.
This year, SCinet set yet another WAN conference record with 8.41 Tbps total transmission bandwidth
from across the globe that was switched through the POLATIS optical circuit switch in the conference
network operating center to the conference floor, with many individual channels at 100, 400 and 800
Gbps.
Speaking about this year's SC24 Rich Jensen, VP Program Management and Architecture at
HUBER+SUHNER Polatis said: "This year we saw 800 Gbps transmission speeds for the first time
reflecting the tremendous growth in data used by ML/AI applications. We are constantly amazed at
what the SCinet community manages to achieve and we are thrilled to see the record transmission
bandwidth passing though our switch. With the rapid growth in ML and AI driving increased interest in
optical interconnect, it is great to be able to demonstrate the capabilities of the POLATIS optical circuit
switch in such a demanding environment."
