Real-time Control Systems Engineer - ENG005 (Cambridge, UK)

We have an excellent opportunity for a Real-time Control Systems Engineer to help shape our market-leading optical switch platform for next generation fibre optic networks. Working as part of the engineering team, the successful candidate will contribute to the development of leading-edge technologies for control of complex optical switching fabrics for agile optical networks. The role will include experimental and analytical work to model dynamic systems, design and implementation of control schemes based on these models and the incorporation of the control schemes into products. This role might be suitable for a recent graduate, either from a first degree or a master'’'s, provided they have some relevant commercial experience.

Principal Duties:

  • Modelling and characterisation of dynamic micromechanical systems
  • Design, implement, analyse and improve algorithms for embedded real-time multi- channel control
  • Development of tools for selection of control parameters in production
  • Supporting systems through production and beyond
  • Feature addition to existing systems

Person Specification:

  • Good bachelor's degree in a numerate subject – preferably engineering (especially electronics or control), maths (applied), physics
  • Practical final year project or a Master's degree with practical project – electronics, control systems, mechatronics, (possibly) robotics
  • Minimum of one year's employment in a commercial setting – must be able to provide an employment reference (but need not be post-graduation)
  • Hardware/software interfacing – e.g. device drivers: implementing software based on hardware datasheets
  • On-target debugging – getting software running on its target platform
  • Control systems modelling and optimisation
  • C (or C++) programming in a structured environment
  • Working knowledge of Matlab or octave for modelling and analysis
  • Candidates must be a self-starter, keen to learn and understand good engineering practice
  • Excellent attention to detail and highly organised are also key attributes for this role
