POLATIS switch at the heart of yet another networking record at SC23 Conference in Denver
In this post, Mike Utley, Senior Manager, Product Management and Marketing, at HUBER+SUHNER
Polatis reports on the Polatis participation in this year’s SC23 and SCinet.
HUBER+SUHNER Polatis was proud to be a part of building the SCinet high-performance network for the
SC23 supercomputing conference, where another WAN conference record was set. The Denver conference brought together members of the international high-performance computing, networking,
storage and analysis community to share the latest research, technologies and demonstrations.
This year’s conference theme "I am HPC" encapsulated, in the words of event chair Dorian C Arnold, "celebrating and championing all facets of High-Performance Computing. This encompasses not only the field itself and its profound contributions to society but, most importantly, the exceptional individuals who drive its progress – whether they are seasoned HPC veterans or enthusiastic newcomers."
SCinet is the dedicated high-capacity network for the annual conference. It is designed and built by a
global volunteer collaboration of high-performance networking experts, which this year numbered over
200 heads, with donated hardware estimated at $43 million in value from 30 vendors including an
optical circuit switch from Silver Contributor HUBER+SUHNER Polatis. SCinet serves not only to provide
wi-fi access to all the participants but is a core part of the globe-spanning data transmissions that
contribute to the exciting demonstrations and experiments which are a key part of the conference and
exhibition proceedings.
This year, SCinet set yet another WAN conference record with 6.71 Tbps total transmission bandwidth
from across the globe that was switched through the POLATIS optical circuit switch in the conference
network operating center to the conference floor, with many individual channels at 400 Gbps.
Of this year's SC23 Rich Jensen, VP Program Management and Architecture at HUBER+SUHNER Polatis
said: "Every year we are amazed at what the SCinet community manages to achieve and we are thrilled
to see the transmission bandwidth and the transmission speeds passing though our switch. With the
rapid growth in ML and AI driving high levels of interest in optical interconnect, it is great to be able to demonstrate the capabilities of the POLATIS optical circuit switch in such a demanding environment."
